Governor Charity Ngilu has issued a stern warning to merchants dealing in sand within boundaries of Kitui County.
Speaking while addressing sand harvesters in Kyanundu and Ndalani villages along River Kivou in Mwingi Central Sub-County, Governor Ngilu issued a stern warning to those found harvesting sand away from the areas designated by the County Government of Kitui.
“I am saddened that sand harvesting is still ongoing, however, it’s all coming to a harsh end….. I am again saying, woe and war into those that will be found harvesting outside Kiromboko area….” She said.
Accompanied by the Kitui County Police commander Mr. Mathias Mang’ira, Governor Ngilu also sent a stern warning to County officials colluding with sand barons in the trade; yet to be legalized in Kitui County.
I am also meant to understand there some senior government officials making a fortune from this illegal trade; their days are over, I shall soon be instituting harsh disciplinary actions against them.” She said.
Permanently banned by the county government of Kitui, sand harvesting had over the years posed life-threatening challenges to the Kitui environment; however, following the ban installed by Governor Charity Ngilu, an immense improvement in the larger Kitui County eco-system has improved much to the local residents’ reprieve.
